🌐 Languages

Chinese and English are the official languages of Hong Kong. All official signs and public transport announcements, as well as most menus, are bilingual. Cantonese is the primary spoken language in Hong Kong.

🌤️ Weather & Attire

November is one of the most pleasant times to visit Hong Kong, with mild temperatures (typically around 20–26°C), lower humidity, and generally comfortable conditions for both indoor sessions and outdoor activities.

We recommend wearing light, comfortable clothing, with a light jacket or sweater for cooler mornings, evenings, or air‑conditioned indoor venues.

As the Sassoon Road campus is located on a hillside, participants are strongly encouraged to wear comfortable walking shoes to navigate between buildings and surrounding areas with ease.

🔌 Power Plug

The standard electrical voltage and frequency in Hong Kong is 220 volts AC, 50Hz, and electrical outlets here take a three-square-pronged plug. Bring a 100 volts transformer along with you to ensure a seamless experience.

💳 Currency and Payments

The legal tender in Hong Kong is the Hong Kong dollar (HKD), pegged to the US dollar at about 7.80 HKD to 1 USD, though rates may fluctuate. Merchants can refuse HK$500 and HK$1,000 notes, even though they are legal tender.

International credit cards such as American Express, VISA and MasterCard, as well as contactless payment such as Octopus card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Alipay and WeChat Pay are welcome at many hotels, retail shops and restaurants.

An Octopus digital or physical travel card is a smart payment tool that allows you to pay cash-free for all major public transport services (MTR, buses, minibuses and some taxis), as well as dining, entertainment, shopping and more in Hong Kong. There are two types of Octopus for visitors:

  • Mobile Octopus: simply download the Octopus App for Tourists to instantly add Octopus to your iPhone or Huawei mobile phone. Check your balance and top up without queuing with your credit or debit card anytime, anywhere on your phone. There is a refundable deposit of HK$50 for Mobile Octopus. When you no longer need the Mobile Octopus, you can easily apply for a refund of the deposit and remaining value through the Octopus App for Tourists.

  • Tourist Octopus: a physical travel card, available from HK$39 without any deposit. It boasts an iconic Hong Kong design that makes it an ideal souvenir, which can be reused when you come back to Hong Kong in the future. There are many ways to get a Tourist Octopus after you arrive in Hong Kong; click here to find out how according to your mode of travel, or you can get one at the Hong Kong Tourism Board’s Kowloon Visitor Centre at the Star Ferry Concourse in Tsim Sha Tsui.

🚇 Getting Around Hong Kong

Hong Kong offers a highly efficient and well‑connected transportation network, making it easy and convenient to travel around the city.

  • MTR (Mass Transit Railway): The fastest and most reliable mode of transport, connecting major districts across Hong Kong Island, Kowloon, and the New Territories.

  • Buses & Minibuses: Extensive coverage across the city, including routes serving Sassoon Road and surrounding areas. Most drivers understand simple spoken English, but it is helpful to have your designation address in Chinese handy.

  • Taxis: Widely available and relatively affordable. Urban taxis (red) operate across Hong Kong Island and Kowloon. Most drivers understand simple spoken English, but it is helpful to have your designation address in Chinese handy. It is also advisable to have some Hong Kong dollar cash ready.

(Remarks: Since 1 April 2026, all taxi drivers are required to provide at least two types of e-payment means, including one QR code e-payment means (such as AlipayHK, WeChat Pay HK or BoC Pay) and one non-QR code e-payment means (such as Octopus cards, credit cards or Faster Payment System (FPS)). Drivers may flexibly choose the e-payment means based on their operational needs. Stickers showing the available e-payment means should be displayed at designated positions on taxi windows for passengers' easy reference.)

  • Ride‑hailing apps (e.g. Uber): Uber operates in Hong Kong and can be used to conveniently book rides, including taxis, via the app.

  • Ferries & Trams: Additional options for scenic routes, particularly between Hong Kong Island and Kowloon.

🧭 Navigation Apps

We recommend using the following apps to plan your journey and navigate the city efficiently with accurate, up-to-date information with ease:

  • Google Maps - Widely used for real-time navigation, route planning, and estimated travel times across all modes of transport (MTR, bus, taxi, walking).

  • Citymapper - A popular app in Hong Kong that provides clear, step‑by‑step directions, including public transport routes, walking paths, and live updates.

🍽️ Dining Charges

Most restaurants add a 10% service charge, though some cafes/diners do not. In certain places, waiters may bring unrequested tea, condiments or snacks, which will be added to your bill.
