Theme Summary
Population aging is one of the most significant global challenges of the 21st century. Understanding aging across the lifespan is a vital theme for healthcare professionals due to its multifaceted impact on individuals and societies.
Aging brings about a spectrum of potential health and social challenges, including chronic diseases, cognitive decline, mobility issues, loneliness and mental health disorders. Healthcare professionals must develop tailored approaches to manage these conditions and enhance the quality of life for older adults, and health professional learners need to be well prepared for supporting older populations throughout their careers.
How these populations are supported varies around the world: inequities across low to high-income countries can exacerbate the challenges faced by older adults. Barriers to accessing healthcare, including limited financial resources, in adequate infrastructure, and a lack of specialized geriatric care can lead to higher rates of untreated chronic conditions, lower life expectancies, and a diminished quality of life.
Exploring aging across the lifespan is vital for healthcare professionals and learners to meet the evolving needs of a growing older adult population, improve healthcare outcomes, and address the social, economic, and technological aspects associated with aging.
McMaster University is internationally recognized for its pioneering research and interdisciplinary expertise in the health and social aspects of aging. At the core of this work is the McMaster Institute for Research on Aging (MIRA).
MIRA’s mission is to optimize the health and longevity of Canada’s aging population through cutting-edge research, education and training, stakeholder collaboration, and knowledge mobilization. The flagship centres of MIRA are Labarge Centre for Mobility in Aging and the MIRA | Dixon Hall Centre, both exemplify McMaster’s commitment to translational and community-engaged research, with the latter representing a unique collaboration aimed at addressing challenges of aging in underserved populations. MIRA is also the home of internationally renowned research platforms such as Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging (CLSA), Voice, a digital platform for community engagement in research and the McMaster Optimal Aging Portal, offering evidence-based health information on Aging.
MIRA collaborates with affiliated Centres at McMaster University and its associated hospitals in Hamilton such as the GERAS Centre for Aging Research, the St Joseph’s Health System | Centre for Integrated Care, the Institute for Pain Research and Care (IPRC), the Gilbrea Centre for Studies in Aging, and the Physical Activity Centre of Excellence (PACE).
We are honored to host the U21 Health Sciences Group in Hamilton to explore shared priorities and opportunities in aging research and education.
