The 2023 IPE International Student Challenge has concluded. Stay tuned for 2024! All videos from 2023 can be found here. This year we had 57 students from across 10 universities complete the Student Challenge.

How can we address the climate change impacts on health?

THe U21 HSG Interprofessional Education Special Interest Group invites students from the U21 HSG member universities to take part in the 2023 IPE International Student Challenge.

(Click on the image to download the Poster). Please note the student Application deadline is now 26 May.

This year the U21 student challenge of June and July 2023 is about Climate Change and its Impact on Health. As it is a broad theme, we ask all students to prepare in advance and as a University to discuss and choose a topic (topics) to submit for the challenge.

Students meet together online to work in small groups of mixed healthcare professions to conduct research and formulate up to five evidence-based actions which could be recommended to the WHO advisory group, creating a five minute video to present their findings.

The general format for the challenge is that groups meet over a webinar for an introduction to the task and to meet their allocated teams. Groups have 3 weeks to prepare their findings, which are then shared at the presentation webinar. Winning and highly commended videos of last year’s challenges can be viewed on the U21 HSG Website.

From university staff we ask to promote the IPE Student Global Challenge event internally within their universities, but also to arrange an internal application process, to guide the challenge preparation of the students and to put forward a maximum of five nominees to the IPE Student Global Challenge sub-group. Students at any stage of a health related programme can attend. It is not expected that faculty staff will have expertise in climate change.

The university staff should also submit the chosen topic(s) by June 5th deadline. These topics will then form a list that all international students can choose from in the introductory session. The student application process will take place between March with a deadline for application of 26 May 2023.

The U21 staff will arrange a preparation meeting for university staff in April to introduce the challenge and answering questions. The application form and student manual will be send in advance.

The introductory online webinar and workshop for students will be on June 12th, and the final online session on July 10th.  Students will be invited to attend a mentoring session on June 26th.

Faculty are invited to attend all online sessions, but this is not compulsory.

Kind regards

U21 IPE International Student Challenge Team,

Christine Hirsch, Marike de Ruiter, Arturo Grau, Polly Chan, Sibusiso Mdletshe
